Sisyphus or Sisyphos was forced, every day, to roll an immense boulder up a mountain, only for it to roll back down every time. This was his punishment from Zeus for cheating death.
Inspired by this classical myth, tasks that are both laborious and futile are therefore described as Sisyphean.
